Caught Red-Handed

*Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from the producer.

I’ve tried this wine in other vintages. Out of the offerings under the Big House label, this is far and away the best and the best value. The 2009 Big House White is very similar to the 2008 I wrote about last time I had this wine. It has a screw cap closure, clocks in at 13.5% alcohol by volume, and retails for about $8. Drink it liberally on the porch or by the pool and don’t wince if you’ve got folks over who take an ice cube in their wine, at this price for a summer sipper, just have another glass and forget about it.

On the nose I found pineapple, jasmine, beer, white flowers, tropical notes, and peach. That is one thing I noticed about all the Big House wines, they have a distinctively hoppy/beery note to them In the mouth I got pineapple, spice, white peaches, tropical fruit, and flowers. Refreshing and crisp this is an easy to drink summer white that won’t strap you for cash.

Lobster roll: impossible food-wine pairing?

Last week, I was in the Cape, existing more or less solely on seafood. One dish, if you will, that has transcended New England appeal and now is making a showing in the trendiest spots in NYC (including out of basements in Brooklyn) is the lobster roll.

Simple in preparation, it consists of about four ounces of cold lobster meat, a mix of claw, knuckle and often tail. This is delicately coated with mayonnaise that may include a other herbs or secret sauce and placed on a bed of shredded lettuce in a hot dog bun, sliced from the top and often lightly grilled or toasted. The end result is lip-smacking, finger licking good. (I snapped the above pic with a cameraphone at Captain Frosty’s in Dennis; it can also come with fries as is standard in the delicious rendition at Osterville Fish Too in Barnstable.)

So, even if there’s no wine on the menu at most clam shacks, the wine geek’s mind wanders…which wine would you pair with a lobster roll? Or is it…impossible?!?

Give Them Some Wine!

The thought of being trapped underground for any length of time is enough to send some people off the deep end. The thought of being trapped underground for 3 months without any wine is a whole different ball game.

In the event you missed the news, an underground landslide has trapped 33 Chilean miners about 700 meters underground since August 5th. Already the group has been trapped longer than any other in history. The miners are miraculously in good health and reasonably good spirits. One of them has proposed to his girlfriend. They’ve made videos for the world. They’re getting vitamins, food, and anti-depressants.

But apparently they won’t be getting any wine, despite specifically requesting it.

Now, there may very well be some very good reason why these guys shouldn’t have any wine, but notwithstanding some dire threat to their welfare as a result (dehydration? rash decisions under the influence) it certainly seems like it would be the humane thing to do to pour some Carmenere down their little supply tube.

If they can’t take a shower, at least let them have a glass of wine.
